I decided I wanted to be a lawyer in my teenage years after watching a series of USTV programmes about lawyers. I thought being a lawyer looked exciting and fun! Of course, the shows were nothing like the reality, but I can genuinely say that my job is far from boring.
I studied my law degree at University in Kingston Upon Thames, and after completing the legal practitioners course in London, I returned to Jersey. Initially I joined a large corporate department in one of Jersey’s biggest law firms and in 2001 I became a Jersey Advocate. However, two years later, I decided to take a break from corporate law, spending time in Australia and New Zealand and then travelling extensively in South and Central America. During this time I did a number of interesting and fun jobs such as driving a limousine for a sky diving company and working in an ice bar.
On my return to the island, I made a decision to change career direction. I accepted a position in a Dispute Resolution department in a different law firm. I made this move so I could decide whether law was the right career for me and as it turned out, this decision was the best decision I could have made. It didn’t take long for me to realise that my skill set was far more suited to Dispute Resolution. I loved the variety of the different disputes I was asked to advise on and I thrived on the challenge of preparing for, and attending before the Jersey court.
I consider myself very lucky to have worked in firms which have exposed me to a variety of different types of law. The variety has given me the opportunity to assist many local people in the island in many different areas of law, helping them navigate the courts in a very difficult and challenging time of their lives. This has been very fulfilling and has also meant that through my career I have been involved in some very interesting cases which have involved very novel areas of Jersey law. The fact some of my cases have helped Jersey jurisprudence evolve is something I am very proud of.
