I moved to Jersey in the early 2000’s following my brother's reccomendation who had relocated here a few months earlier. Internet access wasn’t mainstream yet, when I tried to find Jersey on the Atlas it was nowhere to be found due to its small size. I thought to myself, follow the airport signs and see where you end up! As the flight from Zurich circled the island before landing, I could only see was a few clusters of houses in fields and the odd car popping in and out of hedgerows. Coming from Nairobi, a bustling city of 4 million, I remember thinking “what have I got myself into?”.
Having started off as a chef, I dropped this career path when my first born arrived. I then worked for Durrell as a live-in facilities and hospitality manager at their world-renowned training Academy. This involved hosting conservationists from all over the world either here to train or be trained. While at Durrell I was lucky to host high profile Durrell supporters like John Cleese and David Attenborough. I enjoyed many enriching conversations on balancing between conflicting priorities of protecting flora and fauna, as well as communities sharing the same resource. I had the privilege of attending many Durrell training programmes over my tenure, and I believe this is where I picked up compliance problem solving skills and my mantra, "Quality means doing it right when no one is looking".
Having the Zoo in my back yard and always being around the conservationists brought a new appreciation of the flora and fauna in Kenya. I had taken the natural world for granted even with lots of exposure from my Dad working as a Safari manager, and taking us on Safari regularly.
I left Durrell to join RBSI as a corporate CDD consultant, and after 3 years, I progressed to an operational risk role. After a year in OpRisk, interactions with the compliance department and obtaining a compliance qualification, I transitioned into compliance which involved providing compliance assurance for multiple business lines within the 4 RBSI banks/brands based in 5 regulatory jurisdictions. Two years later I felt it was time to specialise in a specific compliance sector, and moved to RBC to set-up Funds compliance monitoring for MoME clients. The funds business was then sold which led to a short stint at Maples Fiduciary Services as MLCO. After Maples, I worked semi-independently as a compliance consultant in the legal sector, and this experience is what encouraged me to join BCR. Since joining BCR, I am enjoying being part of a local client focused organisation where growth is organic, and colleagues are like a close nit family.
