James started his career in tax for a large mid-tier firm in Birmingham, where he qualified as a tax advisor specialising in large corporate groups and worked in the M&A tax department. James subsequently moved to a bespoke tax practice that specialised in image rights planning for high-profile football players and helped structure offshore tax planning for individuals.
This business later became part of the S&W Group. James moved to Jersey with S&W in 2014 as part of the S&W expansion into the Channel Islands. James left S&W as Head of Professional Services - Jersey and now returns to a bespoke tax practice, which he heads up.
My father was a chartered mechanical engineer, and my mother was a head teacher with a PhD in history, both from working-class backgrounds from the black country. From an early age, they both instilled the importance of education and the value of becoming a professional, of which both my elder brother and I became. My brother became an Actuary, and I became a Tax Specialist.
My inclination was to follow both my father's and brother's footsteps in pursuing a career in mathematics, but soon I realised, as a young adult, I was much more akin to my mother and enjoyed the task of reading source documentation, along with understanding and explaining this to my clients, which led me to my career in taxation.
I enjoy the challenge that tax brings with its ever-changing laws and political dynamics, and I enjoy helping my clients navigate this.
