UK Parliamentary Inquiry Launch: Freedom of Expression

The Joint Committee on Human Rights will investigate freedom of expression as an essential foundation of democratic society, guaranteed by the common law and by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The inquiry will focus on, among other things, the obligations of an employee to their employer when expressing views on social media, and to what extent employers can, and should, respond to what their employees say on these platforms. As part of their investigation, the Joint Committee is inviting submissions from interested groups and individuals, which must be made before 3 January 2021.

Action Point:

Depending on the outcome of this inquiry and whether Jersey decides to follow its conclusions, employers should consider reviewing (or introducing) social media policies to ensure that they conform to the latest guidance.
