BCR Law LLP and The Institute of Law Jersey host successful virtual work experience event for law students

March 22, 2021

A total of 20 students from the Institute of Law Jersey took part in a ‘virtual’ work experience programme with BCR Law LLP over the weekend.

Over the course of the programme, students worked in groups on a real-life scenario, practised interviewing a client, researched points of law, reviewed evidence, provided advice to the client and presented a plea in mitigation of sentence.

The winning group was supervised by BCR Law’s Managing Partner David Benest and included Sara Gonclaves, Emma Bromley, Thibault Aussenac and Hortensia Santos, who will each be awarded a prize. Other groups were supervised by BCR Law Partners Emma Wakeling and Adam Harrison, and Advocate Francesca Pinel. Additional supervision and support was given by the Chief Executive of the Institute, Professor Janine Griffiths-Baker, Dr. Sasha Holden, Associate Dean, and BCR Law Partner Jeremy Heywood. There were also some outstanding performers on the day including Cindy Marquez, Will Masterman, Sara Gonclaves, Sam Losh, Abi Brzezicki, Thomas Jourdan, Jessica Dunning and Ana Silva. Each student will receive a certificate of attendance.

BCR Law Partner Jeremy Heywood commented: “We are thrilled with the success of the virtual work experience day for local law students. Work experience is essential for any young professional to gain an insight into the realities of their chosen career. We were delighted to partner with the Institute of Law Jersey to provide students with this important experience during the pandemic. The level of talent among the individuals who participated was truly impressive and we are proud to support the next generation of lawyers. Once again, congratulations to all the winners and participants.”

In thanking BCR Law for their generous support, Dr. Sasha Holden added: “The Institute of Law was delighted to work in partnership with BCR Law to ensure that our students were able to gain valuable work experience, particularly this year and given the challenges of the pandemic. The feedback we have received has been universally positive and our students have all said how much they enjoyed having the opportunity to work with leading Advocates as part of the Virtual Work Experience Programme.
